This book covers the mills along the River Wey between its source and the town boundary - Orps Fulling Mill, Kings Corn and Paper Mill and Anstey Corn Mill.- as well as the other mills in the area - tan mills, the Windmill and Amery Steam Corn Mill. There are also some short descriptions of the water mills down the River to the Surrey border - Neatham Upper and Lower Mills, Mill Court Mill, Froyle Mill, Isington Mill and Bentley/Binsted Mill.
Sadly buildings associated with all the Alton mills except for Anstey Mill have now gone but the businesses were a very important part of the life of the town and two of the sites were probably in use by 1086. Fulling was a part of the local cloth making industry and the paper mill was set up in the mid-1700s, - not closing until 1909. Together with brewing, the mills remind us how important water was to the development and prosperity of Alton and the surrounding area.
